Rotarians in Richmond brave drizzle, share Rotary!

Part I participants learned about Ethics,
our Rotary World, Leadership,
Membership, Foundation, and Service.
It was chilly and drizzling on November 1st at John Tyler Community College in Chester, Virginia, but the weather did not dampen the RLI spirit. Thirty participants and eight facilitators enjoyed a day of learning, fun, and fellowship.

Rotary District 7600 Lt. Governor Mike Jallo, Past President Boo Elmore, and Gene Moorhead from South Carolina (D 7750) kicked off Parts I, II, and III respectively, and different facilitators led activities, discussions and exercises throughout the day. Other facilitators included PDG Steve Cook, President Colleen Bonadonna (D7610), PDG Jim Probsdorfer and PP Kim Garey (D6700).

We were all fortunate at this event to be led by RLI Regional Coordinator George Tyson, who will step down as of January 1, 2015 to begin his training as DGE. Congratulations, George, and many, many thanks!
Part II class had just finished hearing about Communications
and Public Image when this photo was taken.  We have
their permission to use in our RLI and District publications!

Jacksonville NC RLI Gets Rotarians Working!

A very lively three part Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) session was held on Saturday October 18th in Jacksonville, NC. The event was held at the Coastal Carolina Community College facilities, and was hosted by Rotary District 7730

Two Rotarians graduated by completing Part III of the program, with seven attending Part I and eleven attending Part II. Helping with the registration and set-up and take-down were two students from the Interact Club at Croatian High School. Their presence added the wonder and aspects of youth to our sessions and they were appreciated. Attendees learned about the various aspects of Rotary through facilitated sessions where they interacted and learned together.

We were honored to have District Governor, Vanessa Ervin, welcome the group and also present the RLI pins to our two new graduates at the session end. "Thank You", DG Vanessa.

Attending also from the RLI staff was Event Manager Bob Stinson, RLI Regional Coordinator – Carolina East Mark Lynch and RLI District Chair Steve Hellersperk. Attending Faculty included Rocky Jacobs, Van Sherrill, Belinda Rodebaugh, Ed Shearin, Stan Keller and Rick Snider.

We salute the attendees who took time out of their busy schedules on a beautiful day to join us to have fun, meet new friends and learn about Rotary. Click here for the event in pictures

Our Columbia SC RLI Graduates

RLI Making a Difference in District 7620

From a Report by RLI Faculty Member Mark Milby in Maryland. Last night at the Rotary District 7620 Membership Seminar, Darrell Nevin did his best seminar yet. He has included RLI as one of the points on the new member check list to get the removal of the red badge. There were more than 65 Rotarians in attendance last night. I stood up and and pitched why we have RLI on the check list for a new member. I started by asking, "Who has been to RLI already?" And 90% of the room's hands went up! Several from the recent Mt Airy Maryland Part One RLI were present, by the way. It was a great surprise to all of us to see a high percentage of RLI attendees at the seminar. It bore witness to the fact that RLI is serving many Rotarians and Clubs well. DG Bill Fine and DGE Ken Solow and PDG Claude Morrisette were also delighted to see the effect of RLI on this room of Rotarians. So onward we continue in this trek of Rotary knowledge!

Columbia RLI or Football? Some Chose Rotary!

South Carolina RLI Rotarians had two reasons to celebrate in Columbia on September 13, 2014 --District 7770’s successful fall RLI at Midlands Technical Institute Airport Campus and the Gamecocks win over Georgia in its annual football rivalry.

Thanks to District Governor Jimmie Williamson, Midlands President Sonny White, and Midlands Airport Campus coordinator Kim Boatwright, RLI had a perfect setting for the three separate day long sessions. Despite competition from the football game, 22 Rotarians participated in the day’s events.

District Governor Elect Rod Funderburk opened the day’s sessions and met with faculty the evening before. Rod has been most supportive of RLI in our District and is a faculty member when his schedule permits. Thanks to our present and future DG’s support, RLI has becoming strong Rotarian program in 7770.

Fall facilitators Terry, Jones, Randy Hollister, Area Governor Dick Bowen, Lorraine Angelino and District Governor Nominee Sandee Brooks led the sessions, directed by RLI regional leaders Mark Lynch and Bob Stinson. This was the first of two 7770 planned RLI events for this Rotary year. The next event will be in Charleston Saturday Sept. 21 at the Citadel. There all three parts will be offered as well as faculty training for new facilitators.

Our newest RLI graduates for 7770 are Gayle Bowen Sea Island Rotary (Beaufort), Tom Henderson Clemson-Calhoun Rotary, Gossie Heath Mathis, Lake Marion Rotary, and Mabel Williams, Lake Marion Rotary. Congratulations to these 4 Rotarians.

For information on future RLI events throughout our District and Zone, go to http://rlinews.blogspot.com/. Registration is now open for future events. Additional questions about upcoming sessions maybe directed to Harriett Hilton, District RLI Chair at hhilton@embarqmail.com .

Hello! Multi-Platinum Superstar to Headline RLI Summer Meeting

Touring again, just for RLI... Lionel Richie
Not to be outdone by the Sheryl Crow Concert at the DPAC last year, the RLI Summer Meeting will feature... in his first North American tour in over a decade, one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, multiple Grammy award winning artist Lionel Ritchie, who will be performing at the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh on Saturday night, July 19, 2014. His music appeals across generations and genres. From his days fronting The Commodores to his amazing solo career beginning in the 1980s, his music is upbeat, singable, and smooth, the height of contemporary R&B and soft rock.

RLI is encouraging the individual purchase of “lawn tickets” for the event, and will sit together as a group for the concert. Lawn tickets cost about $35 each (about $50 inclusive of shipping & delivery), and can be purchased from Tickets Official at 855-315-0432. Ticket prices, availability & purchase at the Ticket’s Official website for this concert. Unlike the concert last year, RLI will not be offering any tickets for sale.

Register Now for the RLI Summer Meeting

Registration is now open for the RLI Summer Meeting July 18-20, 2014 in Cary NC. The Meeting is for any Rotarian, RLI Graduate, who is interested in learning more about the faculty and Staff opportunities of the Institute. It promises learning and fun among the best people in Rotary, all as we work to bring the "Power of Rotary" to more and more Rotarians.

RLI Int'l - Sydney Convention Update

RLI BREAKFAST. RLI is faced with a difficult problem at Sydney because so many of our active leaders are not attending the Convention (because of distances and costs) and our registrations for the Annual Breakfast are behind previous years at this time. We hope you, as RLI LEADERS, will try to identify those Rotarians attending the Convention from your areas and heavily promote the Breakfast. Obviously Rotarians sometimes need a little push to participate.

Although we appreciate advance registrations, we will have the capacity to process credit cards at the RLI Exhibit Booth in the House of Friendship. The price is below almost all other similar events. See the attached Breakfast flyer that is also posted on the home page of www.rotaryleadershipinstitute.org We will be notifying some of you where ticket purchases are well below previous years and hope you will exert your leadership to help.

R.I. CHANGES EXHIBIT BOOTH NUMBER- For unspecified reasons, R.I. has changed the RLI Exhibit Booth number to 374 (instead of 300). The location of the booth remains the same. Please stop by the booth to talk with some of our other leaders. In the past our booths have been among the very busiest. Submitted by RLI Int'l Chair David Linett

Jacksonville NC RLI: Inspiration, Learning & Interaction

7730 DG Andy Chused
This past weekend we hosted the Rotary Leadership Training, better known as RLI, in Jacksonville. I am proud to report that we had the largest attendance at an RLI training in our district. Over 40 Rotarians took off from their busy schedules and devoted a Saturday to learning more about Rotary and the Rotarians around them. Everyone there made new friends and developed new contacts in order to strengthen their Rotary knowledge, thus helping them make their clubs stronger and better equipped to do the wonderful work that we do as Rotarians. Thank you to DGE Vanessa Ervin, PDG Mark Lynch, District Trainer Melissa Hight and Bob Stinson for organizing and running the event and all the emails to everyone reminding them about this important event.

I salute the 8 Rotarians who completed the third part of RLI on Saturday. I had the honor of pinning Kathy Askins of the Jacksonville RC, Nancy Boston and Ellen Deaton from the Shalotte RC, Renae Dail from the Kinston Evening RC, Ike Eisenbarth from the Fayetteville RC, John Halada and Gene McLendon from the Morehead City Noon RC and David Nance from the Swansboro RC with the RLI pin recognizing them for making the effort and taking the time to complete 3 inspiring days of learning and interaction with their fellow Rotarians. Thank You. By District 7730 Governor Andy Chused, Reprinted from the April 2014 D7730 Newsletter.

Hilton Head "Mini" RLI a Success

18 Rotarians participated in the recent Hilton Head SC RLI.  This was the maximum turnout that our space would allow.

The event was a "Part I Only" or "Mini-RLI", and was targeted toward those clubs in areas that may be, for whatever reason, underserved by our larger RLI events.

District 7770 RLI Chair Harriett Hilton did a superb job in promoting the event and the result was vibrant, excited Rotarians exchanging ideas, contacts and inspiration during the day, a formula for successful action when they go back to their respective Rotary clubs.

Outstanding Facilitators Sandee Brooks and Dick Bowen got the group involved and interacting all day.

RLI Board Member Stan Cahn made a guest appearance to welcome all participants!

Thanks also to RLI Regional Coordinator Mack Parker for the event support.

District 7620 RLI is Thriving

7620 DG Peter Kyle with 7620
District RLI Chair Bob Parkinson

Great results for District 7620 revitalization of the Rotary Leadership Institute this past year. Thanks to the support from our Zone 33 RLI Division with their concept of mini-RLIs we were able to get nearly 100 Rotarians through Part I of the three part series of seminars. This will provide a strong cadre of Rotarians for Part II and III for 2014-15.

In addition we were able to add 4 new faculty to our core of Bob Nelson (Potomac – Bethesda) and Mark Milby (Sykesville). They are Stephanie Dahlquist (Westminster), Adrian Halpern (Gaithersburg), Pam Kreis (Ellicott City) and Nancy Szlasa (Clarksville). When you see them please give them a "thank you" for their continued support of Rotary through the RLI.

I would also like to bring to your attention that our entire District Governor (DG) Team are graduates of the RLI seminar series. Thanks to them for their "walk-the-talk" approach to RLI.

Next year we have three full seminar sessions during the year, October in Beltsville, January in Frederick and April in Towson. Locations are still in determination but keep your eye onwww.rli33.org for scheduling. We are also intending to have a couple of more mini-RLI, one in the Carroll County area and another in Southern Maryland. For President Elects, We continue to encourage all clubs to fund their new members to attend RLI Part I in their first year in your club. RC of Lexington Park is budgeting for all of Part I and half of Part II. It seems to be working because they have sent most of their new members to RLI Part I this year. The mini-RLI has been a great way to jump start the RLI participation. I do hope to see it continued in 1415. Bob Parkinson, D7620 RLI Chair

Spring Finally Arrived in Mooresville RLI Event

The Spring 2014 District 7680 Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) held on Saturday, March 29th, 2014 at the Mitchell Community College in Mooresville, NC after being previously delayed by eleven inches of snow! The event was fun, successful, exciting and engaging. There were 7 Rotarians participating in the Part l class; 5 in Part II course; and 8 in the Part III course. This makes a total of 20 Rotarians expanding their Rotary horizons through RLI at this event. We were pleased to have District 7680 Governor Luther Moore, also a RLI graduate, share a few word with the graduates and participate in the graduate ceremony celebrating our eight new graduates. (click on photos for larger images, see above)

The RLI Faculty consisted of the outstanding Rotary International Leaders, Bruce Baker, Tarek Moneir, Georgia Oakes, Ed Shearin, Sherry Harris, and Arthur Lightbody. PDG Bill Parker, the Zone 33 RLI Regional Coordinator, his wife and Faculty member Barbara Parker, and District 7680 RLI Chair Alvin Lewis coordinated and ran the event. Photos of the event were taken by Arthur Lightbody, Ed Shearin, and Glenn Fox.

This RLI event provided an excellent example of District Leadership involvement. We had the sitting District Governor, the District Governor Elect, and two Past District Governors all present and participating! Greeting and registering each arriving Rotarian was District Governor Elect Ken Dresser and his wife Barbara. And the Rotarians had a wonderful time sharing their experiences and learning new information, getting new ideas, and discovering more about their Rotary International world!

Rotarians Shine at Beckley WV RLI

Go Beckley RLI!  Part I Participants Enjoy the Experience.
The Governor's Update this week in District 7550 (southern West Virginia) highlights the RLI program that occurred this past Saturday in Beckley, WV.

According to Gov. Harry Faulk, "RLI, The Rotary Leadership Institute, provides outstanding training for Rotarians to become more knowledgeable about Rotary. Rotarians who attend RLI become Club Leaders and make for stronger Clubs. Stronger clubs make a stronger District."

Click here for the Governor's Update, which includes great coverage of our RLI participants in all three parts of the Institute. Congratulations to the District 7550 RLI Committee who did the logistics and publicity for this fantastic event. Also, special merit goes to the Lewisburg WV Rotary Club, who had 9 members attend.

Report on the Thomasville NC RLI

The Mary E Rittling Conference Center at Davidson
Community College, site of the Thomasville NC RLI
I am pleased to report the successful conduct of a District 7690 RLI at Davidson County Community College on Friday, February 28. Seventeen Rotarians attended, and four of those completed Part III and were recognized at the end of the day as graduates: Jay Brennan from Summit Rotary in Greensboro, Toni Underwoood from Thomasville Rotary, George White from the Rotary Club of High Point, and J. G. Wolfe from Kernersville. Three others were registered but could not attend; Bill Parker, our super Regional Coordinator, is working to reschedule these folks for a future session.

Davidson County Community College continues to be the nearly ideal location. Aside from some bridge construction on nearby highways, it is easily accessed, and the Mary Rittling Conference Center is excellent in terms of both facilities and staff.

Our final District 7690 RLI will be at Surry County Community College in Dobson, near Mt. Airy on Saturday, May 31. In addition to District 7690 participation, we are hoping we can host participants from western North Carolina and Southwest Virginia. Facilities there are new and equally attractive. PDG Bob Newton, District 7690 RLI Chair
